Another day, another true crime series – am I right or am I right? Luckily, there’s been plenty for us to sink our true crime teeth into recently, with the likes of The Girl From Plainville and The Staircase keeping us more than occupied.
The newest true crime series making its way onto our screens is Netflix’s The Most Hated Man on the Internet, which premieres on the streaming platform on 27 July. The series will explore the life of Hunter Moore, aka ‘The Most Hated Man on the Internet’, and will take a look at his once-popular revenge porn website, IsAnyoneUp.com.
Ahead of the documentary’s release, we decided to take a deep-dive into the life of the man at the centre of the series and ask: Where is Hunter Moore now?
Who is Hunter Moore?
Hunter Moore – who in 2012 was crowned ‘The Most Hated Man on the Internet’ by Rolling Stone – is the founder of the first ever revenge porn website.
In 2010 Moore launched IsAnyoneUp.com, a site where users (typically disgruntled exes) anonymously uploaded nude photos (typically of their former partners) along with their social media handles. The content posted on the website had significant impacts on those in the photos, with many submissions also including their home address, details of their workplace and family members’ information.
Moore described himself as a “professional life ruiner” and encouraged people on the site to do “their worst” in the comments section under each photo.
Through advertisement deals and merchandising, Moore made significant amounts of money from his revenge porn site, later going on to host parties and build a cult-like following.
What is Netflix’s The Most Hated Man on the Internet about?
Netflix’s The Most Hated Man on the Internet follows the rise and fall of Moore as one woman battles to have a nude photo of her daughter removed from IsAnyoneUp.com.

“Determined to remove her daughter’s photos from a revenge porn website, a persistent mother launches an online crusade to shut down its cruel founder,” the synopsis reads, promising to tell this riveting story through “poignant, exclusive interviews with multiple women and men who fought to have their images taken down, law enforcement agents who worked the case and the crusaders who fought to take Moore down.”
What happened to Hunter Moore?
Although the concept of revenge porn is relatively new – meaning that at the time IsAnyoneUp.com was launched, it was not illegal in many US States – some victims alleged they had never sent their nude photos to anyone and accused Moore of hacking into their devises to get them.
Charlotte Laws, whose daughter was a victim of IsAnyoneUp.com, was one of the first people to claim Moore was at the centre of a hacking scheme. After contacting other victims of the website, Laws took her findings to the FBI who investigated further.
In January 2014, four years on from when he launched the revenge porn site, Moore was arrested by the FBI on charges of conspiracy, unauthorised access to a protected computer and aggravated identity theft. He later pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated identity theft and aiding and abetting in the unauthorised access of a computer. He was sentenced to two years and six months in prison.
On top of his sentence, Moore was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and a restitution fee of $145.70. He was also banned from using social media.
Where is Hunter Moore now?
Moore was released from prison in May 2017, and one year later he went on to self-publish a tell-all book titled, Is Anyone Up?!: The Story of Revenge Porn.
Since then, Moore has kept a very low profile and does not appear to have any social media accounts – although, it’s possible he is using a pseudonym.
Is IsAnyoneUp.com still on the internet?
Just 16 months after Moore founded his revenge porn site, he sold it to entrepreneur James McGibney who redirected it to his anti-bullying website (it now redirects to his personal website).
“Sometimes you need to be a bully to beat a bully and I’m the first to admit that I intellectually bullied the ever-loving s**t out of you,” McGibney said in an open letter to Moore after acquiring his site. “Your main stated objective was to ‘ruin’ young girls’ lives. Even after they indicated that they were going to commit suicide if their unauthorised naked images weren’t removed from your website, you laughed in their faces.”
McGibney went on: “Are you still laughing now? You tried to destroy their lives, but instead, I intellectually destroyed yours. You received a masterclass in the fine art of social engineering.”
Netflix’s The Most Hated Man on the Internet will be available to stream from 27 July.
